Raja's Autism Recovery Photo History

When Raja was diagnosed with autism in 2000, I was advised to institutionalize him. He had lost skills consistently for the past year, despite the administration of therapies. The diagnosticians suggested there was nothing that could be done to help Raja; autism was a brain disorder, they said, and his fate was irrevocably sealed. Although parents were experimenting with dietary intervention and experiencing some success in the reduction of autistic behaviors, the diagnosticians adamantly dissuaded me from trying, saying dietary information only worked for 10% of the population. What if Raja was part of that 10% I wondered to myself. Despite their advice, I went home and tried it. It worked for a short while, then failed. However, once I individualized Raja's diet to his specific needs, his progress was amazing. Then, when I identified and removed the environmental toxins that were preventing spontaneous, developmental advancement, Raja's healing became unstoppable.

Climbing Out Of Autism One Bite At A Time explains the two-pronged, dietary and environmental approach I pioneered as the foundation of Raja's healing. The book includes a detailed list of dos and don'ts; recipes; additional resources; and a description of a stable state- the balanced condition that naturally promotes healing and how to achieve it. Climbing Out Of Autism One Bite At A Time is the basis for Reaching Raja: A Miraculous Journey Into Autism Recovery, an inspirational 90-minute DVD depicting Raja's recovery from the limitations of severe autism.

Dave Hoover is a self-taught harpist and musician whose heavenly sounds grace the corridors of the Cancer Unit, Emergency Room, and other floors at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH). I met Dave briefly during a shift change, but the encounter left a lasting impression. I asked him if he would be interested in recording the soundtrack for our film, to which he said yes.

It is said that the harp is the instrument played by angels. When combined with passion, talent, and a heart dedicated to healing others, the music emitted from this beautiful instrument takes on a magical, ethereal quality. Our thoughts and worries are hushed in the gentlest way, as if the angels themselves gather round to bestow their grace, hope, and brotherly love. I have witnessed this hush in myself and others every time Dave plays. Even Raja, who got to experiment with Dave's harps, banjos, and their exotic instruments built from scratch, is enthralled by Dave's resonant melodies.

Dave recorded the soundtrack specifically for the movie. My favorite track is the one inspired by Raja's joyous curiosity when he entered Dave's musical domain, two strangers meeting for the first time. Dave allowed Raja to play all his instruments, watching with delight as Raja's face lit up the first time he plucked a string and made music. Dave then recorded a song using many different types of instruments, capturing the merriment of music-making, ending the track with a hearty laugh. No matter how many times I hear this CD, it always makes me smile long after the last song plays.
